Reproductive Health Daily: Penicillin versus the... →
reprohealthdaily: A new CBS report, citing an Emory University economist, says that penicillin - not the birth control pill - is what was really responsible for the “sexual revolution” of the 60s. I disagree with this for a few reasons - while it certainly removed one of the biggest-then-fears about unprotected…

Philippines Decides to Help its Women Protect...
reprohealthdaily: The Philippines’ Congress has passed a long overdue bill that will increase access to contraception to women around the country who have historically had difficulty accessing it, and will also mandate sex education in schools. Opposition has been fierce from the Roman Catholics in this staunchly religious nation, but the health of women won out.

PEPFAR Increases Number of Births in Health...
reprohealthdaily: Great news - a study out of Mailman, Columbia’s School of Public Health, shows that the PEPFAR funding and programs have led to an increase in babies being born in health facilities in sub-Saharan Africa. This can greatly reduce maternal and newborn deaths from preventable birth complications and infections.

Games Work Towards Gender Equity
Here’s some good news - a new study out of the International Center for Research on Women shows that coaches who are trained in ways to address gender parity through interventions during sports training can actually alter the ways boys perceive women and girls. Changing - at the very least encouraging questioning of - some of the damaging socially-ingrained notions of women’s roles at...

Taliban Blocks Polio Vaccinations in Pakistan →
This is pretty devastating - Pakistan is one of the only THREE countries where the disease is still endemic (meaning that the infection is maintained in the population without any need for external inputs - like new people coming into the country who are infected), and they have about 200 new cases a year.

…But it’s more nuanced and complicated than that. “More than half of young men and a quarter of young women who participated in a 2009 survey displayed serious gaps in knowledge about common contraceptive methods.” This isn’t too surprising to reproductive health advocates, but the further detailed breakdown is interesting: “Sixty-nine percent of young women...

A new report by the IPS shows that most women in Argentina recently infected with HIV had the virus transmitted to them by partners they believed to be stable and with whom they had believed themselves to be in committed partnerships with - sometimes for years. This poses a host of new issues to address in reproductive health in Argentina. What are your thoughts?
